Hellnar Church in Hellnar, Iceland

Hellnar Church

Hellnar Church is a white, red-roofed church in the small fishing village of Hellnar, Iceland on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It was built in 1945 and sits atop a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. An earlier church, built in 1880, occupied the space, but was replaced when it fell into disrepair. Beside the church is a small cemetary and behind it is a snow-capped mountain.

Another shot of Hellnar Church. While few people live in Hellnar today, it used to be one of the Snaefellsnes peninsula's busiest fishing ports, with around 200 inhabitants in 1700. Fishermen first came to what is now Hellnar around 1550.
